It is my pleasure to present the American Association of Stratigraphic Palynologists Distinguished Service Award to David T. Pocknall.

David became an AASP member during the early 1980s while on research sabbatical at the United States Geological Survey in Denver. In 1992, he moved permanently to the United States to be employed by Amoco Corp. Exploration and Production Technology Group in Houston, Texas. Shortly thereafter, David became AASP Secretary-Treasurer taking over that position from Gordon Wood. David continued in that position for over five years. He ran for President in the year 2000, and in 2001 was chosen to remain in the position of President due to illness and resignation of the President-Elect of that time. David is the only two term President in the history of the Association.

Over his palynological career, David has published on modern and Cenozoic pollen from his native New Zealand, early Tertiary pollen from the U.S. Western Interior, and Caribbean Plio-Pleistocene chronostratigraphy and integrated basin studies. David has been a great ambassador for palynological and integrative studies, and has further been a great ambassador for AASP. He has served the AASP, it’s members and the Board of Directors for nine years in various executive positions, and has carried them out diligently and ethically. At BP, his current employer, he has been able to provide newsletter reproduction and mailing, at no or little cost to the AASP.
